Lotte and the Moon
You were born
thin as a fingernail
then your bone bloomed
and you pressed into the quotidian.
Now we walk into the park,
into language.
There is bus, and there are
people. They kick a
ball between them.
Between us
we must always look first
for the moon.
O the moon,
that pale elusive orb,
that half-full balloon
hidden behind the hills
always moving sideways, like a plate
the name of which is dinner.

Yare'ah
Even an ancient vision
has its moment of birth.
A birdless skyforeign and fortified.
In the moonlit night,
facing your window,
a city dipped in cricket’s cries.
And as you see the road
still gazing at the wanderer
And the moon
On the pine’s pike
You say - my lord,
are all these still existing?
Is it permitted to ask
of their well-being?
From their lakes,
the waters observe usThe tree,
silenced, wearing red jewels.
Never uproot from me, Great Spirit,
The sorrows of your immense playthings.

Mond
My granddaughter points her finger at the moon.
Looking into the blue clear sky at a very small, weak crescent moon, she says “Mond" in german.
All of a sudden, I feel dizzy facing the eternity of life bouncing from one generation to the other - what kind of grandma will she be?
And the moon - she comes and disappears eternally …

Venus and the Moon
Tonight I hear a whispering
It’s Venus to the moon.
A bluey glow is shared by them.
I watch them from my room.
Venus is the daughter
And the father is the moon.
He talks to her so gently.
I watch them from my room.
Red Mars is Venus’ friend
They can play together soon.
The sun is Mars’ nice mother
I can see her in my room.

Moon Story
imagine a mammoth
glowing pearl
filling the night sky over
a jagged cornfield, illuminating
black shadows
near your mountain home
translucent blue velvet clouds
drifting past the white light, slowly,
transparent like
jellyfish
swans' wings
or a cat's eye, the iris, a sliver of
moon glow
staring down through your window
sly and feminine, smiling
knowing
as you sleep these memories
bring your feet to clay craters
and you simply stand in
awe
"That is The Mother" says your witch doctor.
"The full moon in your dream
is you."

Patience
Patience is not sitting and waiting, it is foreseeing. It is looking at the thorn and
seeing the rose, looking at the night and seeing the day. Lovers are patient and
know that the moon needs time to become full.

Luna
Moon, you are alone
Moon, you are mine
Moon, you are the protector of my soul
How did you contemplate silently
So much injustice,
So many cold nights?
An army of poets
and lovers
still defend your throne.
A pack of wolves and lunatics
are still screaming for your light.
TODAY
Moon, I condemn you
Moon, I distrust you
Moon, I’m turning you off
Moon, this is goodbye.

Moon Over Gaza (Naomi Shihab Nye)
I am lonely
for my friends.
They liked me,
trusted my coming.
I think they looked up at me more than other people do.
I who have been staring down so long
see no reason for the sorrows humans make.
I dislike the scuffle and dust of bombs blasting very much. It blocks my view.
A landscape of sorrow and grieving feels different afterwards.
Different sheen from a simple desert, there are whole countries
I could call Ache.
Children who say my name like a prayer.
Maybe it is wrong that I am so calm.
Almost Summer (Ayelet Rose Gottlieb)
Burning kites
cover a moon
past the peak of words
Razan’s smile.
I say her name.
I come from there
and I try to remember.
Your friend Gheed.
Where is she?
I sit on an island
of dismantled words and heartbreak.
I come from there
and I try to remember
but my distant moon often pulls me away from
Home.
I Come From There and I Remember. (Mahmoud Darwish)
I was born like everyone is born
I have a mother, and a house with many
windows, and I have brothers, friends,
and a cold prison.
I have a wave that sea-gulls snatched
away, I have a view of my own and an
extra blade of grass.
I have a moon past the peak of words. I
Have the God sent food of birds and an
olive tree beyond the ken of time.
I come from there.
I return the sky to its mother when for
its mother, the sky cries, and I weep for
a returning cloud to know me.
I have learned the words of blood-
stained courts in order to break the
rules.
I have learned and dismantled all words
to construct a single one:
Home.

I woke up in the morning, and in the cloudless blue sky rested a hazy and slightly dented white moon. Like an old lover on the edge of memory.

Traveler Woman
I wore the cape light like a moon,
draped fish-skin fabric gown over my body, fell into the frozen sea.
Legs all metallic scaled, ripple opal pieces and fractures of the stars.
I fished for nocturnal lovers, among an empty land of grey eyes.
I entered a tall dark city, where a copper woman stood watch.
Her hand aloft aflame and casting freedom fire over the oxen city.
I had once been a woman
I had once been a human
I had once been made of trees and huckleberries
A body transparent as celestial light
I turned my house from leaf to stone
and tried to make this new ceramic body home.
Looked up one night, beyond the iron fence
and saw her following me
the way a creature intrigued follows one home.
And I alone in that tumbled concrete city
suddenly knew a great secret -
that beneath it all was the same great earth
and above it all was the same great sky
and the earthworms and the wild birds knew no different.
The roots called me home to the orca and the cedar
even though I had begun to love the chaos and the metal drum -
Home.
The moon saw me and the trees, my spruce tree mother so far away.
My bones were true – saturated from a lifetime among
the sifted wings of dragonflies and rustle of sleeping geese.
No world is separate.
And lone though I was, I was always a wolf -
wild and curious, exploring the edges of comfort and packless,
I was comforted by the moon’s visitations.
And still
the moon
she finds me
as she has found me over
ten thousand lifetimes;
And my mother
and all grandmothers
have known her.
All of our flesh and forms visited,
all our sacred poetry,
the lines of our every moment lived
Are revered by the moon.
And the moon - she follows me everywhere
and reminds me
I am always
home.

Desert Moon
What is the relation between me and the moon? Between me and the tides? For I am made mostly of water
Desert Moon
No larger than my fingernail.
Desert Moon
Behind a Cloud
Oh Hills of wilderness,
I will turn you into a stairway to the sky.
Oh Hills of wilderness,
I will climb you,
I will blow away the clouds.
Desert Moon,
There will be room for you,
A place of honor.
There will be room for you, desert Moon
However thin you might be, however fragile
This night
You Illuminate.
When she shines in her fullness, round and grand, I thank her and the Great Spirit with all of my heart.
